Psalm 9:10: “…Those who know your name put their trust in you.” Jealous! Exodus 34:10–16 What is a Covenant? Our entire faith is a loving divine-human relationship built on Covenants. A covenant involves three things: promises, commandments (terms) and warnings. The Promises of the Covenant: Blessings, Mercy and Grace Exodus 34:6,7,10 The very first promise of God’s covenant is to mercifully forgive repentant sinners. The Terms of the Covenant: Work or a Wedding? Exodus 34:27,28 So, the terms of the covenant are that they obey His laws – the Ten Commandments. Two Problems: 1. These Guys Stink at Obeying God’s Law. If merit – good behaviour- was the only basis of God’s covenant dealings with people, we ALL would have been destroyed long ago. 2. God is more interested in OBEDIENCE and FAITHFULNESS than rule keeping. The terms of the covenant are NOT a job description God requires of His employees. They are the wedding vows he declares to His people. They describe the loving faithfulness he wants from his wife. The Warnings of the Covenant: Jealousy Justified. Ezekiel 16:38–40. Exodus 34:14 “For you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” Why is God so Jealous? He DEEPLY Loves YOU. (Jeremiah 31:3, Deuteronomy 7:6-8) He CARES about HIS children. (Ezekiel 16:38-40) He (rightfully) wants YOUR worship. (Exodus 34:14, Isaiah 43:21) Following Him isn’t a Job, it’s a Joy. God’s covenant commands are not a job description for God’s employees. They are wedding vows that God has pronounced over his people. Are you honoring and keeping your wedding vows to God?
