Redemption’s Romance is a message shared by Pastor Dwane Parsons from the book of Ruth . Worship with Brenda and her team. CCLI License number 1001973.
Last week we met Naomi, Ruth and Boaz.
Boaz is a good, godly man who happens to be a relative of Naomi’s, could he rescue them from their bleak situation?
Even if things seem dark, we can trust God is still at work behind the scenes.
Even if things seem dark, we can take refuge in God, he will make a way.
Naomi takes the initiative to find Ruth a husband.
Ruth 3:1-4, Ruth 3:8,9
Imagine how Ruth’s pulse was racing when Boaz woke!
Ru 3:9 “Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a kinsman-redeemer.”
Ruth proposes to Boaz!
Boaz replies: Ru 3:11 I will do for you all you ask.
Levirate Marriage and the Kinsman Redeemer
Levirate marriage is a custom where the relative of a deceased man is obliged to marry his relative’s widow and produce a child.
The relative would be called a “kinsman redeemer.”
A kinsman-redeemer was someone who redeemed what was lost.
This could be the other persons’ property, their freedom, or even their name.
In short, the kinsman was a rescuer and restorer.
The Elder Kinsman and The Empty Womb
Problem #1: Ru 3:12 Although it is true that I am near of kin, there is a kinsman-redeemer nearer than I.
Boaz meets the other man, he lays out the situation for him. Then, to our great relief, in verse 4:6 the kinsman says he can’t do it.
Problem #2: Ruth was married for 10 years before – no babies.
Ruth 4:13 – problem solved.
What’s the point?
Ruth and Naomi’s story reminds us that regardless of our setbacks, God will work out His plan to redeem and rescue us.
God loves you so powerfully and deeply that he sent Jesus to be your kinsman redeemer.
The thing that you are powerless to do? He has done for you.
Will you trust in the work God has done to rescue you?
It’s a mighty miracle to see that a story that started Boaz finding Ruth ends up with God revealing OUR kinsman redeemer, Jesus Christ, to the whole world.
And it was all done because of God’s great love.
